Our Story

How it all started...

The Door of Hope originated in 1991 after a meeting with Olav Ryland, Pastor Wes Dobson, Dr Jake Letkeman, and Max Bear. It was decided to begin a street ministry which involved a coffee house. Dr. Merv Johnson was asked to join and the building was purchased. A coffee house was started with Pastor Dwight Greiner running this. This had a tremendous positive effect on many people in the community. The building next door, which is now the present door of Hope became available and was purchased. Because of the bigger premises, I switch was made from being a coffee house to a soup kitchen. A few years later it was decided to build an apartment building for transitional housing. Because government money was needed to fund the building Meadow Lake Outreach Ministries became the legal description. The need for daycare for disadvantaged families was brought to the attention of the board of the Door of Hope and a daycare facility was started.
A grocery reclaim program was started to help with meals at the soup kitchen and out of this grew the food bank. This has become a major part of Meadow Lake outreach ministries because of the need of volunteers to pick up reclaim, organization, and storage in the food bank area and distribution of a large number of food hampers
